Found a Kitten? Don't Panic!

Often kittens are NOT actually abandoned.

Mother cats are working moms who need to hunt for food regularly to provide for their babies.

Stop. Look. Listen.

Carefully examine the nest.

  1. Is it in a safe space?
  2. Is it clean?
  3. Are the kittens quiet?
  4. Do they appear healthy?
  5. Has mom been seen in the last 12-24 hours

If the answers are YES, Cat moms are much better than humans at caring for neonatal kittens, and their chances of survival with mom are much greater. If mom is present, and even if mom is feral, please call WCGHS for next steps in T-N-R assistance.

If any of these answers are NO, you may need to intervene to help them. Kittens who are sick or injured may need immediate help. These kittens should be picked up immediately and provided with care.

If the kittens appear safe and healthy, please watch for mom for 12-24 hours. Kittens need to stay with their mom to have a chance at survival, and the mom cat has to be trapped and brought to the shelter so that she is not separated from her kittens. Kittens are to be brought into the shelter without mom, only if she has not returned to the nest for 12-24 hours. EVEN IF YOU SUSPECT THAT MOM IS FERAL, please call WCGHS for next steps in T-N-R assistance.

Remember: Please contact WCGHS prior to bringing any cats or kittens to the shelter.
