PO hacked out ignition and headlight switches. Slowly piecing them back together and stuck on ignition wiring. Searched as well as studied schematic.

TheSamba.com :: Bay Window Bus - View topic (4)

1) Replacement switch includes a gray and brown (not seeing in schematic)?

2) Red (30 circuit) goes to? Fuse box?

3) Red/black (50 circuit) goes to?

4) Black (15 circuit) goes to?

5) Black/yellow (x circuit) goes to?

Thanks in advance for the help

Click twice on the diagram below to make it big.

TheSamba.com :: Bay Window Bus - View topic (16)

The ignition switch is labelled "D" (tracks #8 through #15), fuses are called "S", wires from the switch connect to the unfused side of the numbered fuse for that circuit.

Make sense?

You can get current flow diagrams (which I love) online for your year model. A factory manual would be helpful too. looks like you are going to need one.

The red/blk one connects to a clear terminal at T8, it should be under the dash, one wire clear (yellowed probably) connector with the same color wire going to it.

The black wire goes to S11 on the fuse box and it turn ends up powering the + side of the ignition coil amongst other things.

The big red wire goes to S8 on the fuse box and should be hot all the time.

The black and yello goes to S10 on the fuse box and powers the light switch, 4 way flashers and a few other things

Oh, I forgot. The brown wires are grounds (negative) and the grey wires, I think, were for the annoying key buzzer so f*ck them.

As a general rule, the red wires are hot all the time, the blacks and are hot with the key on and the browns are grounded. The blues are warning lights, the blacks with tracers are turn signals, running lights, headlights etc.... Might help ya.

The reason some of the wires terminate at the "S" points is because the German word for fuse is sicherung....pronounced, zee-ker-ung

I use two wiring diagrams. The current flow diagram like busdaddy posted plus the regular diagram for a 1972. The wiring is almost identical, but this way I have two resources. I understand the 72 diagram better and stink at reading the current flow style.

If the early style diagram works better with your head then use it, the 72 is fairly close to most later models, but do confirm the same wires are on the same fuse numbers with the later one just in case.

Most of it sorted, but a bit confused on the fuse box call outs.

Black to S11, but existing black wire is on the 10th fuse from the right (I'm assuming fuses are numerical?)

Are there S markings on the fuse Bo's that I'm not seeing?

Fuses are numbered from left to right, sure that wire placement isn't a PO suprise?

Looks like I have a few more presents from the PO, main wire off the starter into the fuse box (red w/white stripe) plugged into 8 instead of 9. I'll be going through every wire in the fuse box now... Sigh.

Some may not be your PO's doing, if you look at fuses #8 & #9 on the diagram you'll see a thin black line between them, same with #11 & #12 and some of the headlight fuses, those fuses are joined by a bus bar (metal strip) on the unfused side of the fuse box, the red/white can be attached to the terminal at either fuse and still do the same thing.

But to aid comprehension and simplify things it's best you replicate the diagram as best as you can, makes future diagnosis so much easier.

Interesting point. Couple of other oddities

1) No wiring for fresh air blower to fuse box

2) No jumper from fuse 9 to 7

3) Replacement ign switch has a gray and brown that are not in schematic.

Otherwise, got the entire dash buttoned up.

That's only installed if the optional fresh air fans are installed in the front ducts.

Later models don't have the jumper, another cost saving measure like less bolts attaching the dash to the body.

Likely a Brazilian made switch, grey is key buzzer usually, other wires are used with parking lights and security systems not available here.

Is that a Euro model bus?, or did you just strip the dash of it's padding?, if Euro the diagram is different.

US bus (Northern California delivery and spent 20 years abandoned in the SoCal desert)

I've just always liked the European dash boards. Welded up as many holes as I could (really should have done ash tray!)
